Sohns Winery

Welcome

We're delighted you've found your way to us. Our winery is a place where family, craftsmanship, and passion have been intertwined for generations. Among our vineyards, not only do vines grow, but also stories, memories, and shared experiences. Each vintage reflects our meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar. With great patience, experience, and a keen sense of quality, we create wines that are honest and authentic.

Fourth Generation

Pascal & Denise

Denise & Pascal, along with their three children Lara, Jakob, and Henri, are now running the winery as the fourth generation. Pascal primarily handles the organization in the vineyards and the winemaking, while Denise is the heart of the wine tavern and the coordinator for all events at our winery.

Third generation

Erich & Sabine

In 2024, the third generation retired. Nevertheless, Sabine and Erich are omnipresent and help with everything they still enjoy. However, the two are now free to take holidays whenever they wish, regardless of the season.

FAMILY HISTORY

Our Story

For generations, Weingut Sohns has been run as a family business and developed with great passion. What once started small is today a mature winery that preserves tradition while remaining open to new approaches. Each generation contributes its part and continues the story with responsibility and passion.

1933

Jakob Sohns

In 1929, Jakob, a trained master locksmith, fulfilled his dream of owning a home by the old cemetery in Geisenheim, which was the first headquarters of what would become the winery. In 1933, he bought his first vineyard. This can truly be considered the birth of the winery. Initially, Jakob primarily built wine racks, while gradually expanding his vineyard acreage as a sideline. Together with his son Otto, who left school in 1945, the winery was then expanded to become the family's main source of income.

1969

Otto Sohns

When Otto took over the winery independently in 1969, three hectares were already under cultivation. With his wife Barbara, who came from a cooper family in Winkel, the focus was primarily on accelerating bottled wine sales. Their two children, Erich and Claudia, thus grew up in an environment where everything revolved around wine.

1983

Erich Sohns

After completing his viticulture training, Erich graduated as a qualified viticultural engineer in 1983. As his two sons, Martin and Pascal, were already born during his studies, he immediately joined the winery and expanded the vineyard area to 6 hectares. In 1987, together with his wife Sabine, he opened the Sohns'sche Straußwirtschaft (seasonal wine tavern) in Hospitalstraße.

2012

Pascal Sohns

After completing his training as an event manager, Pascal moved to Munich to study sports economics. There he also met his wife, Denise. After finishing his sports studies in 2008, he pursued a second degree in viticulture & oenology and returned to Geisenheim. With his graduation in the summer of 2012, Pascal became a partner in the winery that same year. In the years that followed, the current new building was realized, and the vineyard area was expanded to 10 hectares. Since 2024, Denise and Pascal have been jointly managing the winery as the fourth generation.

Jakob Sohns

In 1929, Jakob, a trained master locksmith, fulfilled his dream of owning a home next to the old cemetery in Geisenheim, the first ancestral seat of what would later become the winery. In 1933, he purchased his first vineyard. This can certainly be described as the birth of the winery. Primarily, wine bottle racks were built, while in his spare time, the vineyard area was slowly expanded. Together with his son Otto, who left school in 1945, the winery was then expanded into a primary business.

Otto Sohns

When Otto took over the winery in 1969, 3 hectares were already under cultivation. With his wife Barbara, who came from a cooper family in Winkel, bottle wine sales were particularly promoted. Their two children, Erich and Claudia, thus grew up in an environment where everything revolved around wine.

Respect for nature

ECO?LOGICAL!

As an organically certified winery, we attach great importance to sustainable and resource-conserving management of our vineyards. We aim to preserve the natural balance and cultivate our soils gently so that future SOHNS generations can also benefit. The diverse and regional vegetation in our vineyard soils creates a natural soil supply and promotes biodiversity, as well as the spread of beneficial insects between the rows of vines. Every step of the work in our winery is characterized by meticulous manual labor. From careful pruning to harvesting – we dedicate ourselves to every grape with the utmost devotion and respect for nature.

In the cellar, we intervene as little as possible in the sensitive winemaking process. This ensures that the essence of the grapes remains unaltered, and the aromas can develop to their full intensity. The taste of our wines is always shaped by the terroir and their origin. They tell the story of the Rheingau and its sites – delicate and elegant with vibrant intensity. Our many years of experience and sound training form the basis of our work. Scientific findings, experimental action, and exchange with colleagues drive us every day to produce top qualities.

Taste the origin

Rheingau, Grape Varieties & Vineyards

Our home is a cultural landscape that has evolved historically over 2000 years, where enjoyment and wine culture are highly valued. Enjoy the hospitality of a region that has made "pure joie de vivre" its motto. Geisenheim is located in the middle of the Rheingau, and it also includes Johannisberg with its famous wine castle. Only a few minutes' walk from our winery is the renowned viticulture university, where Erich and Pascal, as well as many other winemakers around the world, received their training.

Riesling plays a central role in our winery, accounting for 70% of our cultivated area. Another 20% of our vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir. Our portfolio is complemented by the grape varieties Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition, we are increasingly focusing on a new generation of fungus-resistant grape varieties (PIWIs). We are currently experimenting with the varieties Sauvignac, Sauvignis Gris, and Muscaris.

The vineyard sites form the basis for good wine. Depending on sun exposure, soil, topography, and location, individual wines with character are produced. We currently cultivate vineyards from Lorchhausen to Hallgarten, with the majority located in and around Geisenheim.

Rheingau Vineyards

Lorchhäuser Seligmacher

The name is derived from Middle High German and refers to sallow willows on walls. The slate soils in the narrow valley of the Rhine store heat and promote the growth of fruity wines with fine acidity and distinct minerality.

Assmannshausen Höllenberg

The Assmannshäuser Höllenberg is one of the steepest vineyards in the Rheingau and, with its violet phyllite slate soil, offers ideal conditions for Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). Wine has been grown here for over 500 years, shaped by the south-facing slopes and proximity to the Rhine.

Geisenheim Kläuserweg

The location around the path to the Klaus below Schloss Johannisberg is characterized by deep, calcareous loess loams. The wines are full-bodied, powerful and require a longer maturation period to fully develop their aromatic spectrum.

Geisenheim Monk's Path

The Mönchspfad path runs from Johannisberg to Eibingen and traverses a geologically diverse landscape. The wines are characterized by an intense interplay of fruit acids and reach their highest quality in dry years.

Geisenheim Walls

The site originates from the former boundary walls and is characterized by deep, calcareous loess soils. The wines offer a voluminous body with fruity, elegant and spicy aromas

Winkler Hare's Leap

The site is named after the frequent encounters with hares, which are considered a symbol of fertility. The wines are voluminous with strong acidity, which harmonizes with aging and develops the full range of aromas and finely fruity acids.

Hallgartener Jungfer

The Hallgartener Jungfer vineyard is situated in a wind-sheltered hollow with an ideal southeast to southwest orientation, benefiting from maximum sun exposure. Its gravelly-sandy quartzite soils impart minerality and finesse to the wines, while the stored daytime heat promotes late grape ripening.

Hallgarten Schönhell

The Hallgartener Schönhell, a gently south-facing slope, offers ideal conditions with shallow to medium-depth gravel soils and deep loess. The wines, especially the Rieslings, are characterized by their full body, fruitiness, and a lively, hearty acidity, and are highly regarded by connoisseurs.
